Everyone has the ability to change. While change can be very difficult, it is possible. With the right support and direction, you can change what isn’t working and gain the necessary tools to live balanced and fulfilling lives.
I have been in the Behavioral Health field for 20 years, as a Counselor, Clinical Supervisor, and Executive Director of Substance Use/Mental health agencies. I hold master’s degrees in both Addiction Studies and Clinical Psychology. I am licensed as an LCPC and LMHC and am also certified as a CRADC.
I am also fortunate to have lived experience of sobriety since 1995.
I opened D.Feeney Counseling & Consulting (Acceptance Counseling), a private practice in the Western Suburbs of Chicago, in 2018. I have been an adjunct professor in the Addictions Studies and Psychology Programs at Governors State University since 2005. I conduct clinical training for agencies and groups and provide Clinical Supervision. As a CEAP (Certified Employee Assistance Professional), I offer EAP services to local businesses and through company EAP benefits.

As we heal, our lives become bigger, we become more involved in activities we enjoy, and we feel more connected with others.
I believe every person can heal.
Healing will be a different experience for each individual, couple, or family.
Therapy can be helpful to people who want to grow and change themselves in any way. No problem is too big or too small. Truth helps with healing.
I create a safe environment for you to connect with the person you have always known/slowly hoped you could be. In doing so, I help you connect with the parts that get in your way and learn to soothe those parts so that your whole system can relax and feel more trusting.
No matter how much hopelessness you may feel, you can heal yourself when you have a support network.
Over time, it is my job and conviction to help you develop natural support systems so that you can continue healing, growing, and moving toward the life you desire and deserve.
I believe that miracles happen here every day, and as Albert Einstein said,
“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” – Albert Einstein.

Specializes in Discernment Counseling. Working with "tough couples," where one is leaning in and another leaning out of the marriage.” If one spouse is not sure they want to stay married AND doubts that couples therapy can help, then Discernment Counseling is exactly where the couple belongs. The leaning-out partner is supported where they are emotionally, and the leaning-in spouse is equally supported in their own emotional state. Discernment Counseling avoids starting half-hearted couples therapy with these mixed-agenda couples. It accepts ambivalence rather than trying to work around it or overcome it. (discernmentcounseling)
